Christmas!

I always worry that the anticipation of Christmas will be more then the excitement of the day and that it will be anti climatic. I was glad to be proved wrong this year. We had a great day and the January 'down' hasn't hit yet (I also haven't gone back to work yet, 2 weeks off might not be a good thing!)

We spent time on Christmas Eve cleaning our house and getting ready for the party. We had several friends over for the Allen tradition appetizer and desert dinner. We read the Christmas story and the kids acted out the nativity scene. It was fun and we all had a good time.
On Christmas morning the kids actually slept in. I couldn't wait any longer and I woke them up at 7:30. I had a great time watching everyone open their presents. The kids were all very pleased with all their gifts - except Lilah. She had a hard day. She wasn't really interested in opening her presents or in playing with her toys - she just kept getting into everyone else's opened toys. The kids were having a hard time with her and when she got yelled at she sobbed. She spend most of the day crying and wanting things she couldn't have. Not a fun day. I spent all morning putting a Barbie house together and adding 51 stickers! I spent all afternoon making rolls and side dishes for our delicious Christmas dinner at a friends house. It was good to have so many friends around since we couldn't be with family.

Thank you Grammy and Pops for the new PJ's

Thank you Aunt Stephanie and Uncle Michael for the Uno Moo game - it was a hit.

Thank you Grandma and Grandpa for Calvin's new shirt and his sharks and for Lilah's stroller

Thank you for all the other gifts I don't have pictures of - Mom, I am excited to finally use my rice cooker this week!

Mike was able to surprise me despite my accidental discovery of an email I wasn't suppose to see and I now have a beautiful Mark Mabry print being framed. I can't wait to hang it up. I'm so glad they finally offered the 10 Virgins for sale! If you haven't seen 'Reflections of Christ' you are missing out. I have the DVD of how it was created if you want to see it!

More Christmas Fun!

Yes, we have more Christmas activities to report on! We went to Washington DC so that I could have my turn at the temple and then show the kids the 32nd annual Festival of Lights at the visitors center. We all enjoyed the amazing lights, the large nativity outside, and the room full of different nativities from around the world inside. They also had some great Christmas trees and all the regular visitor center 'stuff'.

We've also continued on with our 12 days of Service. We've made goodies and delivered plates to friends and neighbors (during a snow storm), picked out a canned good each to drop off at the food bank, 'your choice', and picked out one toy to donate to a charity. Calvin continues to amuse us with his offerings. For his choice to do something nice he tucked Anna Elise into bed. She was terrified he was going to kiss her - Mike wouldn't let him - it was suppose to be nice! His first choice of a toy to give away was one of Madeline's toys, then he picked a piece of his train track, then a broken (I mean REALLY broken car). After telling him no over and over he finally picked out one of his good cars to donate. The girls tend to be more cooperative. I have to say it's been funny to watch this process.

12 Days of Service

We are counting down the last 12 days until Christmas with small acts of service. We started on Sunday with making Christmas cards(see picture). We've made someone else's bed, let someone else go first, and my favorite so far, everyone had to say something nice about everyone else in the family. We limited it to things about a person's character or things they do, you couldn't include physical attributes. This was hard for the kids. Anna Elise caught on but Calvin didn't. His first response was that he liked Daddy's eyeballs, Anna Elise's belly button, Madeline's voice, Lilah's ears, and Mommy's big feet because they looked funny. We made him try again.

Anyway, I have been really missing my family lately and I thought that I would say something nice about every one in my family.

So we'll start at the top with my Dad, Dad works hard! I love the work ethic he taught us. Dad also plays hard and I have lots of great memories of our vacations - waterskiing, camping, crabbing, driving to CA, etc.

Mom is always serving others. I remember her making meals, helping others, serving in her callings, and yet never making her kids feel neglected. Everyone always asked me if I felt left out because of all the kids in our family and I never did - I always felt cared for. Mom is good at taking care of her family and others and never complains!

Trina is so much fun. She is always laughing. I remember all the practical jokes she played on us while growing up, like locking us out of the house and throwing cold water on us in the shower. Trina still likes to laugh and have fun and I enjoy playing card games with her. She has lots of fun with her family and I think it's cool some of the things she is able do with her kids.

Ross is so good. We used to call him our future General Authority. He was our 'perfect example' in those family reporting sessions. We were always teasing him about it, but I am serious. Ross is just a good person and I love him for that.

Stephanie never does anything halfway, if she decides to do something then watch out because she is going to do it right! It's been fun hearing about all the preparations she is making for this new little baby, like the crocheting (did you ever think Steph would crochet a blanket?). Stephanie you have a lot of drive and that is so admirable.

Betsy is the quintessential homemaker. She is the mom I always thought I would be but now realize I won't ever be. She cans and freezes garden fruits and vegetables, makes all her own crafts, furniture, curtains, etc. She cooks dinner for her family and takes good care of her kids and I envy her proximity to mom. You're amazing Betsy and I envy you sometimes.

Janet is so open in her blogs. I love reading them Janet. She may not share everything she does or that goes on, but she is very open with her feelings and I think that is great. I also admire that she is still in school and thinking about more school. I know she has never liked school but she does it anyway and that says a lot about her. (You're also VERY entertaining without even trying to be ;) )

Nancy is just Nancy. From the time you were born you were social. Nancy talks to people she doesn't know, she has tons of friends, she dates lots of boys at one time (boys that she talks to in her classes, which one of us girls EVER talked to boys in our class?) and makes people feel loved. You are a people person and I am in awe of your social abilities!

I love my family and I miss you. I wish we were closer and could see each other more often. I don't think I ever tell my family how amazing they are. I always think they are really cool but never tell them and that is so sad! I see qualities in each of you that I wish I had. I sometimes feel intimidated by all of you! I really struggle to be a better person and I have lots of examples to help me! I love you!

Our Christmas Outing

Yesterday evening we decided to check out a couple of the Christmas displays in Richmond. We started downtown where a couple of the large office buildings host some city lights. There are lots of trees decorated, a huge (30-40 foot) Christmas tree decorated, hanging balls, and tons of white wicker reindeer decked out in lights. Inside the buildings are cute displays, more trees, and an amazing miniature train. The kids loved it.

Then we headed to one of the outdoor malls. We watched ice skaters on a small skating rink (it's not ice but apparently feels like ice when you skate), more displays and at 7pm SNOW! The kids' obvious delight in the fake snow almost (but not quite) made me want real snow.

Anna Elise said we were the best mom and dad ever! Who knew it would be so easy to make the kids happy?

Ginger Bread Houses

Tonight for FHE (yes, I know it's Tuesday) we made gingerbread houses. The kids had
a great time decorating and Lilah had fun eating scraps and leftovers thrown her way. I tortured Mike with Mormon Tabernacle Christmas music and thoroughly enjoyed the evening!
